The 2008 Jackson Mid-Michigan IMAC contest was held June 6th and 7th, and was a great success. There was a very good turnout despite a poor weather forecast and the high price of gas. A big THANK YOU goes out to the competitors that made the drive to Jackson in support of IMAC and the efforts of the Jackson RC club. Thanks also go out to the Jackson RC club members for their efforts to support the contest, groom the field and man(or woman) the concession stand. The folks of the JCRCC had great food and big smiles for all the IMAC fliers attending. To all that donated their time…THANK YOU so VERY MUCH!!! Now to the contest!!! Friday afternoon arrived and we waited for the wind to die down so we could put in a few flights. The wind kept up throughout the afternoon so we spent our time visiting with the IMAC fliers that we have been fortunate to become friends with over the years. It was GREAT to see Rob, Bobby C, Rick, Capt. Jim, Joe D, father and son team- Ed and Ben Kincer, and many others. We had 7 pilots in Sportsman, 7 in Basic, and 4 in Intermediate. Ohio resident and Western Mi. Univ student Brian “The Machine” Sanik anchored the Unlimited class. He was in a class all by himself ( that being Unlimited, of course)!!! Basic flying has really come into its own with many pilots competing with great equipment and solid flying. This was the first contest for Mark Samyn, who flew great sequences in the windy conditions and ended in 1st place. This young man has skills and will be a pilot to watch. Excellent job, Mark!!!! Ron Freeman and Ben Kincer also flew very well to place 2nd and 3rd in the Basic Class. Sportsman was a tight race most of the weekend with a single poor round taking you out of contention. Terry Driver put in some solid rounds in the wind for a well deserved win followed by Robert Cottell Jr in second place and Rob Weismiller in third. Intermediate pilots had their work cut out for them with four competent fliers battling throughout the weekend. Rick Kroeze made the trip from Chatham, Ontario Canada to take the win. Also flying well was Joe Didia, placing second despite a mishap with his transmitter that almost lost his plane. Later, his pilot head separated from the body during a flight and lodged in the tail! Joe used all his experience and skill to bring the airplane home safely. Eric Weinczak place in third demonstrating that he is another young man to be watched. Brian “more beer please” Sanik placed first, second and third in the Unlimited class as he was the sole entry. We were not sure who was going to win as it was neck and neck into the last round but Brian managed to surpass himself. Freestyle was flown in high winds by Chris Haas, son of veteran modeler Joe Haas; Mark Samyn from Basic; and Eric Weinczak of the Intermediate class. All flew well with terrific 3D, high alpha maneuvers but in the end there can be only one!!!Chris Haas took first in freestyle followed by Eric W and Mark S. Well done guys!!! Mike Sotomayor |
